Smarter construction in challenging terrain

Located north of Auckland, the Dome Valley project presented significant access challenges, with many structure locations only accessible on foot.

Traditional infrastructure would have required complex installation methods due to the weight of conventional materials, making helicopter installation difficult and increasing time on site.

By utilising Wagners FRP utility poles and crossarms, the project team was able to install 13 H-frame structures using a lightweight, fully integrated composite solution that transformed the construction methodology.

Lightweight infrastructure that changes the process

One of the project’s greatest advantages was the ability to fully assemble each H-frame before installation.

Factory pre-drilled FRP poles and crossarms allowed hardware to be accurately fitted in a controlled laydown area before being transported by helicopter. With each complete structure weighing less than the helicopter’s lifting capacity, entire H-frames could be flown into position in a single lift.

This significantly reduced work at height, shortened installation time and improved safety for line crews working in difficult terrain.

A complete composite solution

The Dome Valley project is believed to be the first deployment of FRP utility poles paired with composite crossarms in an H-frame configuration across Australia and New Zealand.

By combining composite poles and crossarms into a single structural system, the project delivered a consistent long-life solution offering corrosion resistance, low maintenance requirements and excellent durability in demanding environments.

Designed for an 80-year service life, the complete FRP structure helps reduce future maintenance, replacement costs and operational disruption in remote locations where access is both difficult and expensive.
