The Yilki Coastal Sea Defence Wall in Encounter Bay, South Australia, strengthens coastal resilience while improving public access along the foreshore. Wagners Composite Fibre Technologies (CFT) supplied durable Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) profiles for the project’s stair and handrail structures, delivering a low-maintenance solution designed to perform in harsh marine environments.

The completion of the Yilki Coastal Sea Defence Wall in Encounter Bay, South Australia, marked a significant milestone in protecting the coastline and surrounding community infrastructure from the impacts of storm surge, coastal erosion, sea level rise and flooding.

Designed by Magryn & Associates and delivered for the City of Victor Harbor, the project improves the long-term resilience of the foreshore while maintaining safe and convenient public access to the coastline.

As part of the coastal defence works, Wagners CFT manufactured and supplied FRP structural profiles to CATCON for the construction of three stair access structures complete with FRP handrails. These access points provide safe pedestrian movement across the rock revetment and concrete wave wall while complementing the broader coastal protection infrastructure.

Coastal environments are among the most demanding for construction materials, with constant exposure to salt spray, moisture and harsh weather accelerating the deterioration of traditional materials.

Wagners FRP was selected for its ability to deliver long-term performance in these conditions, offering:

  • Excellent resistance to corrosion, rot and decay
  • Low maintenance requirements over the life of the asset
  • Lightweight components for safer handling and installation
  • High durability in aggressive marine environments
  • An expected design life of up to 100 years

The Yilki Coastal Sea Defence Wall demonstrates how resilient infrastructure can protect communities while enhancing public amenity. By combining robust coastal protection with durable pedestrian access infrastructure, the project ensures residents and visitors can continue to safely enjoy the foreshore for decades to come.

Wagners CFT is proud to have contributed to a project that not only strengthens the South Australian coastline but also showcases the long-term performance of FRP in some of Australia’s harshest environmental conditions.
