Wangetti Trail is a $47 million ambitious ecotourism project set to showcase one of Australia’s finest World Heritage areas, three national parks and the traditional lands of the Djabugay Nation over 94 kilometres of trails from Palm Cove to Port Douglas in far north Queensland.  The initial 7.8 kilometres of the purpose-built, dual use walking and mountain biking trail from Palm Cove to Ellis Beach foreshore is now open to hikers, mountain bike riders and nature enthusiasts and is the first trail of its kind in Australia.

The Grade 3 track is rated as suitable for most ages and fitness levels, with a few sharp turns and steep narrow sections.  The trail takes you through Macalister Range National Park and the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area.  You’ll cross forested slopes, dip in and out of lush rainforest and emerge from beneath towering canopies onto peaks with sweeping view of the coastline.  A one-way journey will take roughly three hours for hikers and 45- minutes for mountain bikers.

Wagners CFT was principal contractor on the first stage of Wangetti Trail installing some 15 Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) shared path pedestrian bridges in the first 7.8km of the trail.

FRP is the perfect solution for Wangetti trail because it’s:

  • Durable – with an expected 100-year design life
  • Inert – fully resistant to rot, rust and corrosion
  • Non-leaching and non-toxic – safe for marine environments
  • Lightweight – so could be helicopter lifted in for installation
  • Resistant – to termites, acid sulfate soils and marine borers
  • Cost effective – with reduced maintenance and replacement cycles resulting in significant savings over the lifetime of the structures
