East End Boardwalk is a key component of Townsville City Council’s Waterfront Promenade network, designed to enhance connectivity along Ross Creek. The 280-metre long, 5-metre wide pedestrian only boardwalk links the Flinders Street East carpark to the Reef HQ Aquarium site, aiming to connect major city precincts like the Queensland Country Bank Stadium, Central Park and Palmer Street. Through this, the East End Boardwalk supports the broader Townsville Waterfront Priority Development Area initiative to revitalise the CBD and improve public access to the waterfront.
Constructed by Wagners CFT, the boardwalk utilises Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) materials, chosen for their resistance to rust, rot and corrosion – ideal for the coastal environment. These materials contribute to an expected 100-year design life, offering sustainable and low-maintenance solution compared to traditional construction materials.
Remarkably in 2025, the East End Boardwalk withstood a 1-in-500-year flood event, demonstrating its robust design and construction quality. This resilience underscores the project’s success in creating infrastructure that can endure severe weather conditions, ensuring safety and longevity for public use. The East End Boardwalk not only enhances urban connectivity and aesthetics but also exemplifies innovative engineering tailored to the challenges of a coastal city environment.
The $6.9M East Enad Boardwalk used cutting edge technology in Wagners FRP structural profiles and is set to save the city millions in repair and maintenance costs over the lifetime of the structure.
Benefits of using Wagners FRP on a project like this include:
- Smart and efficient installation (modular in design)
- Lightweight and can be prefabricated off-site
- Meet AS1657 for access and mobility (as well as AS2156 & AS1170)
- Resistant to rot, rust, corrosion, termites and acid sulfate soils
- Non-leaching and inert which makes them perfect for marine and environmentally sensitive areas
- Reduced carbon footprint over traditional materials
- Reduce maintenance and replacement costs
- 100-year desing life
