What are FRP Handrails?

Wagners FRP handrails are structural pedestrian barrier systems manufactured from fibre reinforced polymer profiles, specifically square hollow sections (SHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS). These systems are engineered for structural performance, corrosion resistance and long-term durability in infrastructure applications.

Unlike traditional materials, including stainless steel, timber or aluminium systems, FRP does not corrode, rust or require welding, painting or ongoing surface treatment. This makes it suitable for marine environments, offshore platforms, industrial sites and other chemically aggressive environments where metal guardrails are exposed to degradation.

Wagners FRP handrails are manufactured using vinyl ester resin matrices reinforced with fibreglass, delivering low thermal conductivity, non-conductive properties and resistance to chemicals, moisture and salt exposure. Learn more about how Wagners make their FRP.

Each handrail system is custom-designed and installed using engineered connectors, mounts and modular components. Systems are typically integrated with Wagners FRP decking, staircases, ramps and pedestrian infrastructure to form complete access and safety solutions.

Standards & Compliance

Wagners FRP handrail systems are engineered and tested to comply with relevant Australian standards and infrastructure requirements.

Design compliance includes:

  • AS1657- Fixed platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders – Design, construction and installation
  • AS5100 – Bridge Design Standards
  • AS1170 – Structural design actions
  • AS2156.2 – Walking track infrastructure requirements
  • AS1428 – Accessibility and disability access requirements
  • Austroads Guide to Road Design Part 6A – Pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure

These standards ensure suitability across industrial, marine, coastal and urban infrastructure environments where guardrails and handrails must perform under continuous exposure and load conditions.

Applications of Wagners FRP Handrails

Wagners FRP handrail systems are used across multiple industries and infrastructure types where corrosion resistance, safety and durability are required, such as marine walkways, industrial access systems, pedestrian bridges and public infrastructure upgrades.

FRP Boardwalks& Walkways

Corrosion-resistant handrail systems engineered for wet areas, marine environments and coastal boardwalks. Suitable for environments with high UV exposure, salt air or chemical exposure, where stainless steel or aluminium systems may degrade.

Engineered guardrail and handrail systems designed for pedestrian bridges supporting barrier loads and long-span infrastructure. Suitable for offshore platforms, elevated crossings and industrial access structures.

Durable handrail systems designed for public viewing platforms where safety, aesthetic purposes and long-term durability are required in exposed environments.

Compliant handrail systems for staircases, ramps and accessibility infrastructure, designed to support safety standards, slip resistance requirements and continuous public use.

Why are FRP Handrail Systems a superior choice?

Built for the toughest environments

Wagners FRP handrails are engineered for environments exposed to chemicals, moisture, high UV and marine conditions. Unlike stainless steel or aluminium systems, FRP does not require corrosion protection.

Strength to weight efficiency

Wagners FRP has a high strength-to-weight ratio which reduces structural demand on supporting systems while maintaining performance under specified barrier loads and continuous pedestrian use.

Reduced installation complexity

Lightweight modular components reduce reliance on specialist trades, scaffolding and heavy lifting equipment. Systems can be installed with improved efficiency using standard connectors and mounts.

Engineered compliance

All Wagners systems are designed to meet relevant standards for pedestrian infrastructure, accessibility and structural design actions.

Environmental suitability

Wagners FRP is chemically resistant and suitable for wet areas and environmentally sensitive applications. It performs consistently across extreme temperatures and variable site conditions.

Low maintenance & reduced lifecycle cost

Reduced maintenance, corrosion resistance and long service life provide a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel, aluminium and galvanised steel systems over the asset lifecycle.

System integration capability

Wagners FRP handrails can incorporate integrated lighting and security systems, supporting modern industrial and public infrastructure requirements.

Engineering & Design Capability

Wagners FRP handrail systems are custom-engineered for each project, ensuring compatibility with structural, environmental and compliance requirements.

Each system is designed with consideration for:

  • Site-specific environmental exposure, including marine, industrial and offshore conditions
  • Standard barrier load requirements and performance criteria
  • Design standards and accessibility compliance requirements
  • Integration with FRP decking, staircases and pedestrian infrastructure systems
  • Modular fabrication, connectors and mounting systems for onsite efficiency
  • Edge protection and guardrail system performance in public infrastructure

FRP Handrail System Components

Wagners FRP handrail systems are supported by a range of engineered components designed to ensure structural integrity, durability and installation efficiency across a range of infrastructure applications.

For detailed connection design and capacities, refer to the Wagners Design Guide. Installation requirements and assembly procedures are outlined in the Wagners Installation Guide.

Wagners can supply custom-manufactured plastic endcap accessories designed to complement composite handrail systems and associated structural elements.

Manufactured from lightweight thermoplastic alloy materials, these components are corrosion-resistant and designed to match the long service life of FRP infrastructure assets. Endcaps provide protection to exposed member ends, supporting durability in environments with high UV exposure, moisture or in marine conditions.

Inserts are manufactured using an injection moulding process and produced from glass fibre-filled thermoplastic alloy.

These inserts are corrosion-resistant and pest-resistant and are installed at bolt hole locations to improve local bearing performance. They enhance crushing resistance and improve bolted connection capacity in structural applications, particularly where handrails are installed in aggressive environments or subjected to higher loading.

Wagners supplies an extensive range of stainless steel connectors and fastening systems to support FRP handrail installation. These include stainless steel brackets, bolts, nuts, washers, screws and rivets, selected to maintain corrosion resistance while ensuring reliable structural connection performance.

Fastening systems are designed to support installation efficiency, compatibility with FRP profiles, and long-term durability in environments exposed to chemicals, moisture and variable weather conditions.
